Heartworm Prevention

Heartworm Prevention

We are recommending Proheart SR12 the annual heartworm injection for all dogs. Dogs have an injection at twelve weeks of age, again at six months of age and then once annually. Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes. Heartworm is seen in Perth and Mandurah not uncommonly with Murdoch University treating heartworm cases from the Perth region on a regular basis.

We have also seen a recent case of Heartworm at our hospital. Unfortunately many dog owners do not use heartworm prevention so there is a huge population of dog's out there who are reservoirs for the disease. This disease disappeared for a while with the arrival of the annual injection which wiped it out but because people are not using prevention regularly any more, this disease is starting to become more common again. We strongly recommend you get an annual heartworm injection for your dog to prevent disease.

Canine Heartworm destroys your dog's heart and lungs. Prevention is better than cure.

We are not currently recommending heartworm prevention for cats. If you would like to protect your cat from heartworm disease, Revolution does protect your cat against heartworm but you must apply it monthly.
