Luxating Patella

Luxating Patella in the Dog

A dislocating knee cap is called a luxating patella in the dog and will cause significant lameness. If it is not repaired, significant osteoarthritis will develop along the edge of the stifle and the articulating surface of the patella will be damaged causing chronic pain. This condition should be repaired. It is extremely common and you will see your dog "skipping" along holding one back leg up until the knee cap pops back into the trochlear groove. The dog then runs normally. Most people think their dog "is not in pain" however this is not true. Imagine your knee cap running along the inside of your knee. It hurts!

Surgery is required. This is available at Treendale Pet Medical
