After hours veterinary care
Baxter had a routine health screen and we unexpectedly found he had elevated liver enzymes. This was disconcerting for his loving owners because he seemed quite well. This is the value of a senior health screen. We pick up the red lights on the dashboard allowing us to save the animal before it’s too late.
We suggested an ultrasound and we found that Baxter had an adrenal tumor. One of Baxter’s adrenals was greatly enlarged at one end. The adrenal cancer was secreting cortisol that was causing changes in his body and in particular his liver.
With adrenal cancers there is really only one option. Cancer needs to be removed and the sooner the better. Dr Rob has memberships in surgery allowing us to do amazing life-saving surgery.
We were a bit worried about Baxter’s liver enzymes so we thought we should check his clotting factors. Liver disease can lead to blood clotting issues and haemorrhage during surgery. We were a little concerned about his ability to clot so we had a blood transfusion on stand by. Baxter had successful surgery to remove his tumor.
Baxter had his adrenal cancer removed and he needed some blood post operatively that we were prepared for. Baxter’s surgery and transfusion was successful and Baxter was able to go home a few days later and has never looked back. We have seen him for some routine health checks and he has been doing very well. Baxter is still cancer free and has a cancer survival time beyond twelve months now.
