The Tragedy

Brax was bleeding and was extremely anaemic. Mum had noticed a few drips of blood around the house but assumes one of her girls was on heat so didn’t think much of it. Then she noticed Brax had a nose bleed and he seemed a bit quieter than normal.

When Brax came in he had bruises all over his gums called petechial haemorrhages. Dr Rob was very worried because he knew Brax had no platelets and had a serious bleeding disorder. The challenge was to find the cause and then to try and save him. Brax was in a fight for his life.

The Prognosis

We ran a full blood test on Brax and checked his clotting factors. He had zero platelets. Dr Rob had grave concerns for Brax. His clotting factors were normal which meant the reason he was bleeding was because he had no platelets.

Brax was diagnosed with immune mediated thrombocytopaenia ITP. Disease of the immune system is difficult to predict and because Brax was bleeding we were very worried for his future. Brax’s mum would not give up and so we started treatment.

The Miracle

Brax was in hospital with immune mediated thrombocytopaenia which destroyed his platelets causing bleeding. Brax was on multiple immunosuppressive drugs which he responded very slowly to initially, placing him in grave danger with a life threatening illness. Brax had platelet transfusions initially but with his failure to respond to therapy he started to bleed profusely.

He spent 9 days in hospital and had 5 blood transfusions. His mum would not give up. Dr Rob would not give up. His darkest hours filled us with doubts and sadness. Miracles sometimes happen though despite the overwhelming odds. Most owners would have given up on Brax. Most vets would have given up on Brax. It would have been easy to say he’s given it his best fight and we’ve tried everything but his loving mum WOULD NOT give up on little Brax.

Brax was saved by the love and determination of his caring mum to give him every chance and by the dedicated professionals at Treendale Pet Medical. Brax was in hospital for weeks but he pulled through. He has had regular blood tests and health checks since but he is alive and well 18 months later. This really was an Easter miracle.
