After hours veterinary care
Harry decided to take on the Labrador “beef fat tainted” sand challenge. In order to win a night in hospital on an IV the Labrador must ingest the equivalent of a nine litre bucket of sand that is tainted with beef fat from the barbecue.
As well as this mighty marathon of gooey sand the Labrador must also ingest a side salad of grass and earthy microbials to inappropriately complement the flora of his intestinal biome. If the Labrador can ingest this food fiesta within five minutes he gets his name on late night legends and a free T-Shirt for his adoring Insta followers.
Harry’s herculean inorganic ingesta is currently tracking through his colon having sand blasted the microvilli from his enterocytes. Harry’s intestinal lining is currently undergoing a five day inflammatory phase but is expected to repair itself yet again. Despite the misery of intestinal cramping and nausea and the draining sequelae of an entire day vomiting, Harry sat in the consult eyeballing the treat container and glancing at Dr Rob for a vitality regenerating super food. Eye’s on the prize Harry….eyes on the prize.
Harry is sick……..very sick. Despite vomiting all day, he still wants a treat in the consulting room during his physical exam. This extraordinary ability of a Labrador to still demand and eat food despite shedding the intestinal and stomach mucosa lining the GI system is an intangible and unworldly peculiarity of the breed which does give evidence for extra terrestrial origins of Labradorean evolution. Dr Rob can palpate a megacolon.
Xrays confirm that our HUNGRY HARRY has consumed a backyard worth of sand. How and why are difficult to explain to any logical mind so we shrug and say “it’s a Labrador thing”.
Harry spent the night in hospital on an IV after having a colonic enema. Harry went home the next day, his GI still under repair but his appetite unaffected. We provided medicine to save Harry from himself but his loving mum was able to control his ingesta long enough for resolution.
Harry remains well and under observation for the prevention of further food challenges.
